Optimizing Latency for RustDesk: Tips for Global Deployments

Speed is everything in remote desktop. Learn how to strategically place your relay servers to ensure a lag-free experience for your users.

Optimizing Latency for RustDesk: Tips for Global Deployments

In the world of remote desktop, latency is the enemy. A 100ms delay might be fine for an email, but it makes a mouse cursor feel like it’s dragging through mud.

If you want your users to feel like they are “actually there,” you need to optimize your network path.

The Physics of Remote Access

No matter how fast your internet is, light only travels so fast through fiber optic cables. If your data has to cross an ocean and come back, you will have lag.

Tip 1: The “Closest Node” Principle

Always deploy your ID and Relay servers in the geographical center of your users.

  • If your clients are in Mexico City, don’t host in London. Use a datacenter in Querétaro or Dallas, Texas.
  • For Brazilian users, São Paulo is the only choice.

Tip 2: Use Multiple Relays (Pro Feature)

One of the best reasons to use RustDesk Pro is the ability to use Multiple Relay Servers. You can have one server in the US and one in Europe. The RustDesk client will automatically test the speed to both and choose the fastest one for that specific session.

Tip 3: Avoid “Double NAT”

If your relay server is behind too many layers of routers, the “Hole Punching” (direct P2P connection) will fail 100% of the time. This forces every bit of data through the relay, increasing load and potentially latency. The Fix: Use a VPS with a dedicated Public IP whenever possible.

Tip 4: Performance Tuning

In your RustDesk client settings:

  • Prefer VP9 or AV1: If your hardware supports it, these codecs provide much better quality at lower bitrates.
  • Enable Hardware Acceleration: This reduces the CPU lag on both the host and the client.

Conclusion

A self-hosted server is only as good as its placement. By choosing high-quality infrastructure providers in the right regions, you can provide an experience that rivals (or beats) costly commercial solutions.
