Deploying RustDesk on a Budget: Low-Spec Servers that Actually Work
Doing more with less. How to choose cost-effective hardware for your relay infrastructure.
Deploying RustDesk on a Budget: Low-Spec Servers that Actually Work
You don’t need a massive budget to have professional-grade remote support infrastructure. One of the beauties of RustDesk is its extreme efficiency. Here is how to build a relay on a budget.
The 1 VCPU Rule
A single modern virtual CPU (vCPU) can easily handle 50+ concurrent relay sessions. Unless you are supporting a massive enterprise, you don’t need expensive multi-core instances.
RAM is Rarely the Bottleneck
RustDesk’s server components (HBBS/HBBR) are incredibly lean. They often consume less than 100MB of RAM even under load. A 1GB or 2GB RAM instance is more than enough.
Where to Save and Where to Spend
- Save on: Storage. You only need enough space for the OS and logs. 10GB-20GB is plenty.
- Spend on: Port speed and Latency. Ensure your “budget” provider has at least a 100Mbps port and is located in a reputable datacenter close to your users.
The Budget Setup (2026 Prices)
By choosing a reliable, low-cost provider like Hetzner or similar, you can have a fully operational professional relay for as little as $4-6 per month.
At DeployRD, we help you find these “hidden gem” provider regions to maximize your ROI without sacrificing connection quality.
